Melissa officinalis

  • Bushy herbaceous perennial 

  • Lemon-scented leaves

  • Prefers well-drained soils but tolerates poor soils and drought once established

  • Edible white flowers bloom in fall and summer

  • Leaves and flowers can be used for teas and flavorings of soups, stews etc

  • New leaves are more flavorful than mature ones

  • Prune to remove spent flower stalks to encourage new growth

  • Self-seeds and spreads by rhizomes

  • Deer resistant
